Twitter buys TweetDeck for more than $40 million

These two companies were negotiating the app weeks ago and finally within hours they have closed the deal, apparently Twitter has acquired TweetDeck for more than $40 million mixed with cash and stock, according to sources close to the negotiation, as reported CNN.

In February, rumors pointed that UberMedia was about to buy TweetDeck, and supposedly UberMedia offered between 25 and 30 million dollars. But Twitter offered almost twice more than UberMedia. Also in parallel with these facts, Twitter suspended UberTwitter and Twidroyd due to policy violation. Those were two of the most popular mobile applications from UberMedia.

All this could have been a smart Twitter strategy to prevent UberMedia to gain more power over their service. Let them take TweetDeck would have been giving them too much power over their microblogging service. Because of that the purchase has been interpreted as a defensive measure from Twitter.
